Plastic People part of the UN Plastics Treaty Negotiations

In March 2022, at the UN Environment Assembly, a resolution was adopted to develop a legally binding agreement on plastic pollution. Since then governments from around the world have been convening and discussing terms for the agreement. The fourth meeting, INC-4, was held in Ottawa in April 2024 where 4000 delegates from around the world descended on Canada’s capital city. Negotiations will wrap up with INC-5 at the end of 2024 in Busan, South Korea.

As part of the commitment to facilitate a conversation shift around the urgent health issue of microplastics through a robust impact campaign, the Plastic People team recognized the opportunity to influence key policymakers taking part in the UN Plastics Treaty negotiations.

Working closely with Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault, the Plastic People team was able to incorporate the film into the official program with the High Ambition Coalition High-Level Meetings on the eve of the negotiations.

This screening included Environment Ministers, High Commissioners, Ambassadors, members of the business coalition and other notable delegates including the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance. The screening also included a panel discussion afterward with Co-Director Ziya Tong, Author and Executive Producer Rick Smith and WWF International’s global lead on plastics Eirik Lindebjerg with moderator Sholeh Alemi Fabbri from Good Measure Productions (photo below).
