Celebrating Change: The Artists for Peace and Justice Annual Gala at TIFF
This year’s Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ) annual gala at TIFF was an inspiring night that reminded us all of the transformative power of education and community. With just shy of one million dollars raised, we’re proud to say that our efforts will help over 3,000 children in Haiti access education this year at the only free public high school in the country.
Education is key to change, and in Haiti—the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere—every bit of support counts. It’s an honour to be part of a dedicated board that includes incredible individuals like Natasha Koifman, Kardinal Offishall, George Stroumboulopoulos, Rose Mantella, Suzanne Boyd, and Joanne Bull. Together, we work tirelessly to make a difference every year for some incredible students.
The night was also filled with phenomenal performances from superstar Nelly Furtado, singer-songwriter Ben Harper, award-winning artist Fefe Dobson, and Paul Beaubrun, who comes from music royalty in Haiti and moves the crowds each year with his stories and songs. Their talent added a vibrant energy to the event and underscored the evening’s purpose.
This year’s gala was particularly special as we honored the legendary Jane Goodall, who, at 90, brought not only her wisdom but also her delightful wit to the evening. Her insights on the importance of nurturing future generations resonated deeply with everyone present. Comedian Rick Mercer also graced us with his humor, reminding us to find joy in our work, even when the stakes are high.
As we reflect on the night, it’s clear that the work we’re doing is crucial. Each dollar raised will directly impact the lives of children in Haiti, giving them the fighting chance they deserve. Events like this remind us that, together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change.
Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this incredible cause. Your contributions will help shape a brighter future for thousands of children. Let’s continue to advocate for education and opportunity, and support one another in this vital work.
